If you receive the "Unable to bind card" error while adding a payment card to your Mercuryo account, there are several possible reasons why this may happen.
Follow the troubleshooting steps below to identify and resolve the issue.
Make sure your card has sufficient funds
When you add a new payment card, Mercuryo performs a €1 pre-authorisation charge (or the equivalent in your local currency) to verify that your card is valid.
This amount is not charged and is typically released back to your account within a few minutes.
Please ensure your card has at least €1 (or the equivalent in your local currency) available before trying again.
Check that your card is supported
Mercuryo currently accepts the following card types:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- Maestro
If you're using a different card type, it won't be possible to add it as a payment method.
Contact your bank
Your bank may be blocking the card verification or transaction.
Some banks apply additional security checks or restrict cryptocurrency-related transactions.
We recommend contacting your bank to:
- Confirm that card payments to Mercuryo are allowed.
- Approve or unblock the transaction if necessary.
Complete the 3D Secure authentication
Some banks require 3D Secure (3DS) authentication before a card can be verified.
Make sure you've completed any authentication requests from your bank, such as entering a one-time password (OTP) or approving the transaction in your banking app.
Check how many cards are linked to your account
Each Mercuryo account can have a maximum of 4 different payment cards linked to it.
If you've already added four cards, you won't be able to bind another one.

Why do I see a €1 charge on my card?
The €1 charge is a temporary pre-authorisation used to verify your card. It is not a payment and is usually released by your bank within a few minutes, although the exact timing depends on your card issuer.
